Plot [ edit] The film starts off indicating the parallels of the story with that of Adam & Eve. Here, Adam is Ranjeet, Eve is Sharda while the apple is Nirmala. Ranjeet is newly employed in a company, whose pay scales can be gauged from the fact that he goes to work on a bicycle. However, this bicycle itself brings him face-to-face with Sharda, when he bumps into her by accident. Sharda's bicycle gets badly damaged & Ranjeet drops her off. The same evening, Ranjeet goes to the wedding of his friend Abdul Karim Durrani ( Asrani) a co-worker & a poet. Sharda is also present at the ceremony. Sharda & Ranjeet's love blossoms from there & soon they get married. In the course of a few years, Ranjeet is Sales Manager of the company and father of a son. Sharda & Ranjeet are still living in marital bliss. That is, until Nirmala, Ranjeet's new secretary, shows up. Ranjeet is inexplicably attracted to Nirmala. She is an honest girl who is trying to make two ends meet. She is much more beautiful compared to Sharda. But most of all, she knows nothing about Ranjeet's true intentions & his married life. Ranjeet is initially upset with his thoughts about her, but finally gives in. He carefully plans his further steps. He pretends to be the helpless grieving husband of a cancer stricken wife, who won't live much longer. Nirmala feels sorry for him, thus making it easier for him to get close to her. Nobody, not Sharda, not even his closest friend, suspects a thing. One day, Ranjeet bluffs to Sharda that he will be late coming home as he has a meeting. He takes Nirmala out to dinner. Next day, Sharda finds Nirmala's handkerchief, with lipstick marks on it, in Ranjeet's pocket. She immediately confronts Ranjeet, who makes up a story about a co-worker whose handkerchief he may have accidentally taken. Sharda reluctantly believes him. Ranjeet decides to take his next steps more carefully. Sharda too starts thinking that her fears were unfounded. Ranjeet makes even more interesting back up plans: He prepares two books of poetry, professing his love. The poems are the same in both, only one book contains Nirmala's name, and the other contains Sharda's. Ranjeet courts Nirmala without Sharda's knowledge. The turning point comes when Sharda sees him in a hotel with Nirmala. She later asks him about his meeting, about which the clueless Ranjeet lies. Sharda's fears are confirmed. She starts spying on him & Nirmala, taking incriminating pictures. After sufficient evidence is obtained, she secretly meets Nirmala, posing as a journalist. Nirmala, who hasn't seen Ranjeet's "ailing wife" yet, thinks Sharda intends to blackmail her. But Sharda reassures her that she won't. Nirmala spills all the beans, upon which Sharda reveals her true identity. Meanwhile, Ranjeet gets another promotion & rushes home happily to tell his wife about it. Sharda catches him unawares and lets him know that he is busted. Ranjeet does not know what has hit him. He turns round, only to see Nirmala behind him. Sharda tells him that she is leaving him & the divorce papers will be soon sent to him. Sharda & Nirmala console each other. Ranjeet calls upon his friend & lies that Nirmala has said some malicious lies to Sharda about him. Ranjeet's friend sides with him & lies about Nirmala's character. Sharda exposes Ranjeet in front of him as well, with help of the evidence she has collected. Sharda tells Ranjeet to choose either her or Nirmala. Ranjeet quietly gives Nirmala some money & lies to her, in a last-ditch attempt at damage control. But honest Nirmala returns the money to Sharda, making things even worse for Ranjeet. Mudassar Aziz's upcoming film Pati Patni Aur Woh, starring Kartik Aaryan, Ananya Panday and Bhumi Pednekar, is another one that relies on the concept of 'Gharwali' and 'Baharwali. The makers of the film were so lazy while conceptualising this film that they didn't even want to invest in a new story or even an innovative title, for that matter. As the makers proclaim proudly, it is a remake the 1978 film of the same name which featured Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Ranjeeta Kaur. As the new Pati Patni Aur Woh hits the screen on Friday (December 6) we revisit the 1978 film directed by late filmmaker BR Chopra. The film, which released around 41 years ago, is considered as one of the classics of its era. It is said to be ahead of its time as the film showed the husband-wife relationship with a 'realistic' perspective. But then, we have to admit that it was problematic in so many ways. After making path-breaking cinema like Naya Daur (1957) Sadhna (1958) Kanoon (1960) and Chhoti Si Baat (1976) among several other gems, BR Chopra directed and produced Pati Patni Aur Woh, which talked about a middle-aged man Ranjeet Chhadha (Sanjeev Kumar) and his adventures of keeping an extramarital affair with his secretary Nirmala Deshpande (Ranjeeta Kaur) despite having a loving and caring wife Sharda (Vidya Sinha) and a son. Shardha comes to know about her husband's affair and confronts him only to hear more lies. At last, Ranjeet gets caught and casts aspersions on the innocent secretary. To save her family, Shardha accepts her husband who swore not to repeat it. But, as they say, men will be men, Ranjeet is seen bringing out another set of medicines to fool his new secretary. This time, it's Parveen Babi. WHAT WENT WRONG IN PATI PATNI AUR WOH IN 1978 The problem with the BR Chopra film begins with the very first scene where Ranjeet and Shardha meet for the first time. The way the guy approaches the girl with sly remarks would have been extremely controversial if the film would release today. Ranjeet surprising Shardha by landing up at her doorstep to propose marriage is absurd, too. And then the father getting ready for the wedding, no questions asked, is unbelievable. Do we need to mention that the misogynistic conversation between Ranjeet and his cronies before the newlyweds' Suhaag Raat is disrespectful on so many levels? We think not. The handling of female characters by the writer and director is pathetic. They are shown as brainless, if not helpless, during the entire two hours of the film. The first time Nirmala meets Ranjeet and on being asked why does she want to work, she says, Basically, koi Hindustani ladki working girl nahi hoti. sounds insulting to many working women who work because they love being independent and not because they have any compulsion. Ranjeet says, Aap jawaan hai, khoobsurat hai. Aapki figure achchi hai. Fir aap. Khair jo bhi hai aapke vichaar kaafi shuddh hai. Mujhe pasand aaya. From dialogues to camera work and direction, the women are objectified in so many scenes in the film that keeping a count of it is difficult. Here, we should mention that BR Chopra is the same director who made Sadhna in 1958 which was about the emancipation of sex workers, exactly 20 years before he made Pati Patni Aur Woh. Even towards the end of the film, Ranjeet seems to have not learnt any lesson and even failed to understand the pain he caused his wife. He is again seen initiating another extramarital affair with his new secretary. Pati Patni Aur Woh Review: Abhinav Tyagi aka Chintu Tyagi (Kartik) a government employee from Kanpur, is smitten by the feisty Vedika (Bhumi) when their parents get them to meet each other as a prospective match. Soon, they tie the knot. The couple seems to be enjoying marital bliss until Tapasya Singh (Ananya) walks into their life. She adds a dash of sass and spice to Chintus otherwise mundane existence. He now wants to spend time with the young girl, who is in Kanpur to look for a plot to set up a workshop for her boutique in Delhi. When Chintu feels that she is hesitant to be friendly with him due to his marital status, he spins a yarn. Adding to the madness is his friend Fahim Rizvi (Aparshakti) who sometimes aids Chintu in his exploits, and at times adds to his troubles. Unfortunately, things go out of control and lead to a lot of confusion and drama. Kartik as Chintu Tyagi strikes the right balance as a man who breaks away from the routine when an opportunity presents itself. The actor has a charming screen presence and makes the most of his part. Once again, he strikes with a monologue, something thats become a trademark for Kartik. This time around, however, he isnt ranting about the women in his life, but talks about the rut that most middle-class men get caught in. Bhumi is in good form as the ambitious Vedika (Chintus wife. She is a teacher, who has her own fan following among her students, and even flaunts a glam avatar. The actress has proved that she can get into the skin of any character and does the same with ease this time around, too. Ananya, who made debut earlier this year with ‘Student Of The Year 2, shows a lot of improvement. She does need to work on certain aspects like her dialogue delivery, but she seems to have found her comfort zone in front of the camera. Besides the three central characters, Aparshakti Khurana, with his noteworthy comic timing, often steals the scene. He has proved time and again that he is an asset to any film. The actor has shared screen space with Kartik in ‘Luka Chuppi, and their easy camaraderie is evident in this movie, too. Its their scenes together that bring in the most laughs. Filmmaker Mudassar Aziz, who has directed films like ‘Happy Bhaag Jayegi (2016) and ‘Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi (2018) has a firm hold over the romcom genre. Though he takes some time to set up the plot, he doesn't let the film deviate from its path. He keeps the film breezy and ensures that there are enough funny dialogues and witty one-liners to keep you hooked. He keeps the narrative simple and avoids getting into the preachy zone. Though the plot is known, the director manages to keep you invested throughout. Though this is a remake of the Sanjeev Kumar-starrer, the treatment given to it is such that it is relevant even to the viewers today. The dialogues are funny, but though words like ‘kantap are used, it seems to be a superficial attempt at adding a local flavour. A tighter edit would have helped quicken the pace, but thankfully, there arent too many songs popping up. Watch out for two special appearances and a throwback to the original film, when Kartik hums, ‘Thande thande paani se. If you are looking for some good entertainment this weekend, this one could be a delightful watch.

Among the many things wrong with the new Kartik Aaryan movie is a line uttered by a policeman in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The cop asks a Muslim character, essayed by Aparshakti Khurrana, his name. When he says that it is Fahim Rizvi, the cop, jokingly warns him that he needs to be careful or hell get ‘encountered. Rizvi doesnt have a comeback because the jokes on him. Only Yogi Adityanaths supporters would grin, youd think. But everyone laughed. In his continuous attempts to channelise discourse around the historically oppressed group of straight upper caste men, Kartik Aaryan yet again plays a role weve seen him play before. From spouting monologues about male victimhood in chic Bombay apartments, the milieu has shifted to the ‘charmingly rustic city of Kanpur, never mind that its one of Indias most polluted cities. Welcome to the world of Mudassar Azizs Pati, Patni aur Woh where Aaryan ensures he works on his characterisation to set himself apart. After all which actor wants to be typecast? So hes grown a moustache, thrown in a ‘small-town haircut and replaces Jack and Jones blazers with Deepak Shopees check shirts tucked neatly under formal trousers. An intense transformation. Early on, hes married off to Pednekars Vaidehi. Shes progressive and spunky because she enjoys sex, as she makes it clear in their first meeting. Small time erotica, check. She wants to migrate to Delhi because she thinks they belong to the capitals ‘clubs and restronts (oh, the disappointment that awaits her. Hes happy with the gentle monotony of everyday life as a sincere government employee. They quarrel, they make-up, life goes on. They enjoy three years of marital bliss. Trouble starts when Ananya Pandeys Tapasya (the name, Im sure, was reverse-engineered to fit some dirty innuendos) shows up from Delhi to look for a plot of land to set up a manufacturing operation for her designer line. While she looks for a plot, the filmmakers forget to write one. Pandey is introduced butt-first (because, of course) and our adarsh baalak, whos tasked with the responsibility of helping her find a plot, is enticed out of his marriage to forge a complicated relationship with her. He lies about enduring a cheating wife, she falls for them because women are naïve, doofus. Then they have sex. Nope. Then they just hang out and go for drives because thats what horny adults do. Over the next two hours, Aaryan cheats and manipulates his wife and then, the film would like you to believe, gets outfoxed by some smart cats. However, the films messaging remains clear: Men make mistakes (because, well, men) and so women must ensure they dont stray by cleverly guilt-tripping them into monogamous submission. (“Before a woman praises your smile, ask yourself who is the reason for your smile in the first place” is an actual line in the film that increasingly starts resembling an overlong TikTok video. If Biwi No. 1 and Masti had a child (which they never should) itd be Pati, Patni, aur Woh, a woefully tone deaf and misogynistic drama that thinks its woke but its actually too dumb to even realise how problematic it is. Its a film that thinks its subverting the overdone love triangle but its the most conformist movie to come out in recent times. Aaryan and his best friend go to insane extents to hide his supposed affair but of course, instead of reflecting upon his transgressions, the film offers the poor male protagonist a redemptive arc, with the women turning in extensive emotional labour for the man to see his to go back to his same old ways because #MenWillBeMen. Its a film with the kind of performative bullshit that gives you a headache because the writer-directors actually seem to be convinced about the nobility of their subject matter. That Pednekar and Aaryan are persuasive and the lines are laced with quick, easily digestible humour make the drama even more troubling. But the films hollowness and shady worldview comes through despite its distracting one-liners and Aparshakti Khurranas superlative performance. In a scene where Pednekars character is shown to be straying, shes shown in a Western attire (LOL) something she doesnt wear before. While Pandeys character is progressively falling for the leading man, her wardrobe goes from chic dresses to salvaar-kameez because whats love for women if not voluntary domestication? Throughout this, Aaryan wallows in self-pity and self-shame, getting drunk and breaking bottles, dodging cops and prudent relatives. Look what the menacing women made him do! While one understands the templatised characters of Aaryan and Pednekar, Pandeys part remains a mystery. Shes posh, shes South Delhi, and when in Bombay, shes decidedly Juhu. In fact, it appears that Pandey absent-mindedly wandered off from the sets of a Dharma movie and ended up in Pati, Patni aur Woh. She has one expression and one tone throughout the film as if the director praised her once for a particular scene and she decided to freeze the same for the rest of the film. Ive seen more expressions on a mall mannequin than on Pandeys face. Well, if the collections of Kabir Singh are anything to go by, its entirely possible that Pati, Patni aur Woh will turn out to be a hit. The success of a movie tells a lot about people watching that cinema than it does about those making it. And India, as we know, loves to hate its women.
