I had just witnessed footage of my favorite band over 2 years as if I were a fly-on-the-wall. We got to see content not meant for the everyday viewer, but as fans, got the inside scoop all thanks to Denholm Hewlett. It's almost like Denholm is a fan of the band himself, and he knew exactly the kind of stuff we'd want to see. 😏
The name, Reject False Icons, is a reference to Phase 2, which I think is alluding to the fact that the film is solely about the "humanz" involved in the behemoth project that is Gorillaz. The film focuses mainly on Jamie, Damon, and the live band, however, a smattering of Jamie's colorful art, flashy music video footage, and live visuals keeps us entertained in the transitions. One unfortunate note is that the older music video footage did not seem to be ready for a giant screen, as much of it was still low-res.
The documentary opens up with an homage of the many phases of Gorillaz, finally landing on Jamie's post-apocalyptic/surreal art for Humanz, set to "Tranzformer." The movie is then broken up into three acts - essentially the 'making of' Humanz, Humanz on tour, and The Now Now on tour. Bizarre and cool interludes from Ben Mendelsohn help break up the narrative of the film.
To call the movie a traditional documentary is a bit of a stretch. It lacked narrative and was instead a collection of clips and dialogue (with each scene being no more than about 30 seconds long) documenting the Humanz and TNN tours as they progressed. That being said, the film was an absolute treat for die-hard fans of the band. We got to see and hear many early demos from Humanz and The Now Now - including a beautiful rendition of Busted and Blue by Kelela, a banging version of Phoenix on the Hill recorded in Jamaica, and what's potentially a previously-unheard TNN track, Founding Fathers.
There were also some very "meme-able" momentz coming from Mr. Albarn. I was delighted by the laugh my theatre got from watching him shuffle across the street in his pajamas, Smoggy declaring he had "a bit of a rough night."
My wishlist for the next Gorillaz documentary is perhaps something more interview based, where fans can learn more about the behind-the-scenes thinking that goes into making Gorillaz. For example, how Damon and co. select collaborators, and explaining who the collaborators are to people who aren't YET Gorillaz fans.
In comparison to Bananaz, this film comes across as far more polished and professional - reflecting a similar the journey that Gorillaz have taken these last couple of years. On the last night of the tour, Damon thanks the musicians & crew, saying their act had become "top class." While Bananaz may have been better as a look into the process and history, Reject False Icons was an absolute feast of material for fans to geek out on.

Frankly, I found it more comical than anything premise is pretty weak, not helped by an at times rather corny plot with often silly horror scenes.
On the upside, the acting is fine and does include appearances of well known Canadian actors.

The sub got new people into the game, shared tips on how to make the scene more accessible to new players when the game was made free for a weekend, etc. To see a community that has always been so positive and helpful turn on Bethesda so quickly and so openly— this should be a very big sign. This isnt a group of people who have been on the fence about Fallout 76– most of this sub fucking loves the game. Bethesda, pay very close attention to this reaction. Your most positive, happy fans have turned on you almost immediately. Is this really the group of patrons that you want to ostracize? Honestly, Bethesda should think very carefully about going down this path. EDIT: Theres been a bunch of comments about how this subreddit was never really a positive one. I think Ill walk back my original statement; compared to the General fallout subreddit, this one has been largely positive. EDIT 2. 0: There's been talk challenging the efficiency of this post in actually changing anything. You're right; Bethesda doesn't give a shit about Reddit posts, and they likely give very little shit about this community, regardless of how positive (or toxic) it can be. But ultimately, I think that it's still worthwhile to express my opinion on both the choice being made and the likely impacts of this choice. For me, it seems that Bethesda is actively choosing to prioritize pay-to-win players over a large swath of loyal customers who, while they might not purchase this particular product, are a driving force in both he popularity and community-building behind the game. If Bethesda makes this choice, they will still make money. They will still turn a profit, and they will still have people who buy their game. But if Bethesda is interested in continuing to capitalize on the nostalgia of an exceedingly popular, beloved gaming franchise, I fear that this move might make that very hard. So a after watching this multiple times I think Im gonna give my interpretation like many others have. The black wolf is a reference to something, not a wolf but in fact a dog. La vida artificial, la realidad virtual, las imágenes generadoras por ordenador…. Son sólo la primera entrega de un nuevo universo, capaz tanto de ensanchar como de sobrecargar el espíritu hermano, NADA volverá a ser como antes. Si es que alguna vez lo ha sido”.

La revolución tecnológica y el consiguiente desarrollo avanzado en los medios de nuestras sociedades actuales, ha promovido una gran variedad de fenómnullenos que se están presentando especialmente en el ámbito comunicativo. Uno de esos fenómenos, el que más nos compete como diseñadores visuales es el de los nuevos giros que toma el manejo general de la imagen, su uso y su lectura. Con respecto a esto, Román Gubert en su libro titulado “Del bienestar a la realidad virtual”, afirma que “La densidad de nuestra iconosfera se ha incrementado considerablemente en los últimos veinte años, debido a la aparatosa emergencia de nuevas modalidades de imágenes computarizadas en una nueva etapa posanológica e interactiva de las relaciones entre hombre y máquina en el campo de la producción icónica”. Tal enunciado nos reitera lo que postula Lorenzo Vilches en su imagen digital asegurando que probablemente el advenimiento más espectacular de la migración digital tenga a la imagen como protagonista.

Sabemos bien que en la actualidad la imagen se nos muestra como el código por excelencia de los nuevos lenguajes que plantea nuestra evolución comunicativa. Ahora bien, si agregamos a eso las infinitas posibilidades que abre la digitalización de la imagen, o mejor de toda nuestra iconosfera, nos encontraremos con que ante nuestros ojos se impone todo un mundo onírico que nos hacer ver y sentir casi omnipotentes, pues ya podemos materializar de un modo virtual lo que a nuestra mente y a nuestra inteligencia les plazca, devolviéndose así la libertad de imaginación, de creación.

Nace entonces un nuevo universo con el mundo físico y el virtual perdiendo cualquier tipo de inconexión que pudieron haber tenido alguna vez y como lo plantea Art futura en su apeste Realidad aumentada, “El espacio urbano, el espacio social y el espacio íntimo se ven cada vez más complementados por el espacio de la información. Seguimos habitando en las redes, pero la pantalla, el teclado y el auricular son cada vez menos importantes, siendo sustituidos por al ciudad y el cuerpo”.

El arte y la ciencia marchado al unísono, el último evolucionando al primero, ampliando los planos de la percepción y del sentimiento humano y proponiendo nuevos patrones de formas de vida que contrastan completamente con los tradicionales esquemas que conocíamos de los medios análogos. Aparecen de ahí nuevos y revolucionarios conceptos como el de “La experiencia participativa en el arte digital”, concepto éste que se enraíza a partir de las experiencias de Vam June Paik e los 70s. de esas experiencias acompañadas del avance tecnológico y científico de las últimas tres décadas, se desprende todo un movimiento híbrido de arte, ciencia y tecnología del que surgen, casi en una reacción en cadena, ideas como la imagen numérica, el cine y el video digitales, la realidad virtual, el net.art y la multimedia, ésta última con variaciones y categorías tan importantes como lo son los video juegos, una muestra contundente de lo que es hoy la imagen digital, surgen muy seguramente de esa constante búsqueda de nuevos mundos que generen nuevas experiencias, nuevos retos y nuevos objetivos que superar. Han tenido una tremenda evolución y han llegado incluso a alcanzar en la actualidad altos niveles de relación con la realidad creando nexos más profundos y directos entre el usuario y la máquina, esto gracias a que esas nuevas atmósferas con tan altos niveles de realidad promueven grandes descargas morales que permiten que el usuario llegue incluso a desahogar sentimientos en el pueblo y a descargar grandes niveles de energía en él.

Los juegos son pues, parte de ese nuevo lenguaje onírico que nos plantea el mundo digital donde las leyes de la naturaleza son modificadas totalmente y donde se crea una extensión de nuestro propio mundo que se convierte ahora en un mundo más participativo, más manipulable y controlable y aunque solo sea en la mente del ordenador y en la imaginación nuestra, más vivible.

Estas “Nuevas imágenes” como los denomina Vilches, marcan el punto de inicio de todo sin recorrido inmenso de posibilidades de creación ilimitada en donde cada vez se hace más imprescindible la aplicación de estas nuevas tecnologías en el constante evolucionar de nuestra civilización.

Se produce al mismo tiempo una completa revolución en nuestra iconosfera, que hace necesaria, como lo dice el mismo Vilches, “Una reflexión sobre el nuevo estatus de los objetos compuestos de elementos estrictamente íconos cuya referencia principal es la de ser construidos por medio de técnicas de realización que implican necesariamente el uso de la informática”. Igualmente se hace necesaria y según el mismo autor, reflexionar sobre como se va a hacer frente a esas nuevas imágenes y a los consiguientes nuevos lenguajes que se producen a partir de allí en los demás campos de la comunicación y la industria.

Corresponde entonces, esta dura tarea reflexiva en gran medida al diseñador, quien debe saber articular la manera más idónea posible, esos nuevos códigos que plantea el lenguaje digital para la comunicación visual, es él quien debe indagar a través de la investigación sobre todos esos nuevos efectos que ejerce sobre nuestra sociedad, nuestra cultura y nuestra percepción del mundo, el advenimiento de estos nuevos universos fruto de la tecnología, y es él quien debe seguir buscando soluciones a las diferentes problemáticas que la imagen digital propone.
